This unique collection includes the work of American poets and writers
who were commissioned to write poems, stories, and impressions based on American Art.
The images, therefore, are as important as the words; the words inspired by the images themselves.
The most wonderful part of this collection is the connection between to forms
of expression: poetry and art. On their own, both can be mysterious and intimidating,
yet in this collection, each serves the other in equal proportions, increasing understanding of both forms of expression and
offering new ways of seeing the art and the poems upon each re-reading.
Among the authors and artists included are Anglea Johnson, Ron Koertge, Nancy
Willard, Jackson Pollock, Edward Hopper, Grandma Moses, Georgia O'Keefe, and Grant Wood.
The poems included are both playful, sad, and challenging, each poems tone depending upon the artwork involved. Its Me! A poem by David Harrison is a playful
and funny look at Andy Warhol's painting Marilyn Diptych, each face of
Marilyn taking on a different persona, the text jumping around on the page. Each poem and each piece of art offer the
reader a chance to expand both their mind and perspective on what they are seeing and reading.
This collection would be particularly useful in art and writing classes, showing
the integration of different media as a form of art. This collection includes biographical notes on poets and artists
and is indexed.
