Dan Zane's Polly Wolly Doodle

This song as sung by Dan Zanes is entertaining and fun.  As a poem it is still fun and familiar.

POLLY WOLLY DOODLE

oh I went down south for to see my gal
polly wolly doodle all the day
oh my sal she's a spunky gal
polly wolly doodle all day

fare thee well

fare thee well

fare thee well my fairy fay
for I'm going to luzianna  for to see my suzianna
singing polly wolly doodle all the day

oh my sal she's a maiden fair
singing polly wolly doodle all the day
with curly eyes and laughing hair
polly wolly doodle all the day

fare thee well...

i went up north to see my guy
polly wolly doodle all the day
my guy si had a cinder in his eye
singing polly wolly doodle all the day

fare thee well...

i went outside to see my friend named pete
polly wolly doodle all the day
but he was down in the basement polishing his feet
polly wolly doodle all the day

fare thee well...............ad infinitum

The best extension for this song would be to read it as a poem and then, perhaps at the end of a wild day, to listen to the Dan Zane's recording of the song and sing it as a class.  You could also compare reactions and to both the poem and the song and discuss whether or not it works as a poem.
