Sarah's Poets

Poem about a difficult subject in children's lives

We hate for children to be sad, but it is crucial for them to understand the process of life, both good and bad.  This poem explores the process of grieving.

Cat's Funeral
E.V. Rieu

Bury her deep, down deep,
Safe in the earth's cold keep.
Bury her deep--

No more to watch bird stir;
No more to clean dark fur;
No more to glisten as silk;
No more to revel in milk;
No more to purr.

Bury her deep, down deep;
She is beyond warm sleep.
She will not walk in the night;
She will not wake to the light.
Bury her deep.

Have the students talk about their pets, either current ones or ones they loved in the past.  Talk about how hard it is to lose a pet - no matter how old you are; if you have lost a pet, share your experiences.  If any student would like to share a pet story, funny or sad, give them a chance to do so.  Try to promote an atmosphere of open sharing - don't put any pressure on anyone.
